Submission of my work to CDA-Projects Grant for Artistic Research and Production

CDA-Projects Grant is accepting applications to support the production of artistic research projects aimed at critical knowledge production with a transdisciplinary approach. 10,000 Euros will be awarded based on the decision of an international jury for the selected project to be completed by July 2012.

CDA-Projects will also support a publication after the completion of the project, which will reflect the research and production process. The publication will be completed in the following six months and launched in December 2012.

CDA Projects is a commercial gallery in İstanbul, which represents established and emerging contemporary artists from Turkey and abroad.

Application deadline: November 30th, 2011.

Submission of my work to Cubist Debris Open Call for Submission to Postcard Series

In an effort to expose the Berlin community to emerging artistic minds,Cubist Debris – Berlin is launching a monthly postcard project/competition. Submissions are open to all Berlin based artists for this year long special edition.

Project Description:

A monthly postcard each created in collaboration with one of 12 Berlin artists.  Each postcard is a new work by the artist, designed specifically for print at Cubist Debris.

Criteria for selection are:

Only original fine art is eligible; reproductions of other artwork such as drawings or paintings are not acceptable. Work must have been completed within 2 years of the submission deadline.

THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE. Independent artists, workshops, publishers and dealers are all welcome to submit recently completed work.

Compensation:

All participating artists do so at no cost to themselves. Compensation for participating in the project is 10 postcards from the artist’s own edition, as well as one set of the entire series.

Submission of my work to participate at the international exhibition NordArt 2012

NordArt is one of Northern Europe largest annual contemporary art exhibitions. The exhibition in summer 2011 displays the work of 250 artists from 55 countries.
The NordArt exhibition is organised by the non-profit initiative ‘Kunstwerk Carlshütte’ and is open to all visual art media.

The unique exhibition area consists of the old foundry building ‘Carlshütte’ with an area of 22.000 sqm and the adjacent sculpture park with over 80.000 sqm.
Preceding the exhibition the international NordArt-Symposium takes places bringing together different generations of artists and offering them the opportunity to create large-scale works. All works created remain property of the artist.
Each year one artist is awarded with the NordArt-Prize, worth 10.000 Euro, with the aim to support the art and culture scene. In addition a Public Choice Award, worth 1000 Euro is awarded. The winners are invited to participate in the following year.

> During this edition of flashlights’ workshops I would like to concentrate
on the both artists as well as curators and their role in creating
any kind of art event. Looking through the history of contemporary art
and curating itself I will analyze few examples and try make

“Jorge hat mich dazu eingeladen bei der Eroeffnung dieser Austellung etwas zu sagen. Das ist natuerlich eine grosse Ehre fuer mich! Danke! Ich moechte die Gelegenheit nutzen, um Ihnen von dem Ort zu erzaehlen, wo die meisten der von Jorge hier ausgestellten Arbeiten entstanden sind: Suedindien, Tami Nadu.

Ich habe von 2005 bis 2007 in Indien gelebt und dort in der Landwirtschaft gearbeitet. Bei einer Reise kam ich nach Pondycherry, wo sich unerwartet ein Portugiese an meinen Cafeetisch setzte, wir kamen ins Gespräch. Es war Jorge Cruz, der mir erzählte, dass er Maler sei und Dank eines Stipendiums des portugiesischen Kulturministeriums nach Pondycherry gekommen sei, um dort zum Thema “Utopia et Matter”, also “Utopie und Materie, oder Material”, zu arbeiten. Er lud mich in sein Atelier ein, wo ich ab diesem Zeitpunkt viel Zeit verbrachte, um Jorge beim Arbeiten zuzusehen. Ich konnte also den gesamten Entstehungsprozess seiner Bilder mitverfolgen.

Jorge hatte sein Atelier in einer mit Strohdach abgedeckten Bambushuette am Strand eingerichtet. Vorne war sie offen, also ohne Glas, einfach offen. Durch das fensterlose und recht weit vorstehende Bambusdach, war es ziemlich dunkel in dieser Huette: ein Segen, denn die Sonne brannte meistens mit voller Wucht vom Himmel.

Jorge hatte aus Europa keine Materialien mitgebracht, und war nur mit einem Rucksack angereist. Er wollte seine Arbeit aus dem entstehen lassen, was ihm vor Ort begegnen wuerde. Die erste Arbeitsphase fuer sein Projekt bestand eigentlich nur aus Recherche: Auf der Suche nach Leinwaenden lernte er einen indischen Kuenster kennen, der ihm all seine Leinwande baute und mit dem sich Jorge viel austauschte. Farben, Malereien und Pigmente spielen eine wichtige Rolle im oeffentlichen Leben in Suedindien. Jorge verbrachte viel Zeit damit durch die Strassen zu wandern und die Menschen bei er Verrichtung ihres Alltags zu beobachten, immer auf der Suche nach Materialien und Maltechniken fuer seine Arbeit. Vor vielen Häusern finden sich wunderschöne Zeichnungen, die mit Pigmenten, in einer ganz bestimmten Rieseltechnik gezeichnet werden. Sie sind ein Zeichen dafuer, dass das Haus geputzt wurde, ganz normal, völlig alltäglich. Ähnlich sind auch die Windschutzscheiben vieler Busse, Autos und Rikshas mit kuntvollen Zeichnungen versehen, sie wurden für die Fahrt gesegnet. Viele Frauen tragen einen roten Punkt auf dem dritten Auge und einen oben auf der Stirn am Haaransatz. Der auf dem dritten Auge ist nur Schmuck, der am Haaransatz dagegen ein Zeichen dafür verheiratet und demnach bereits vergeben zu sein. Manche Männer und Frauen sind kahlgeschoren und haben den Kopf gelb bemalt, das Resultat eines hinduistischen Rituals. Manche Männer tragen den roten Shivastreifen auf der Stirn.

All diese Beobachtungen haben auf die ein oder andere Art Eingang in Jorges Bilder gefunden, oftmals entfremdet und ihrer Funktion entledigt, umfunktioniert. Tempelfarben, Pigmente, Henna, Aufkleber und Stempel hat Jorge ebenso verwendet, wie die traditionelle Rieseltechnik, die die Frauen nutzen, wenn sie die reinigenden Hausarbeiten beendet haben. Ich moechte Sie einladen, sich die Bilder von Nahem anzusehen und auf Entdeckungsreise nach diesen Elementen zu gehen.

Viele von Jorges Bildern zeigen Gottheiten, oder religieoese Symbole. Ich selbst war damals tief beruehrt von dem selbstverstaendlichen Umgang mit Spiritualitaet, den ich in Tamil Nadu – und auch anderen Teilen Indiens – beobachten konnte. In Europa koennen wir mit Spiritualiaet offensichtlich nicht viel anfangen, den Umgang damit empfinde ich oftmals als verkrampft, manche verlieren dabei die Bodenhaftung zu verlieren. In Suedindien dagegen ist Spiritualitaet das Normalste ueberhaupt. Die erste Frage, nach “what ist your name?”, die einem oftmals gestellt wird, ist “what ist your god?”. Einmal habe ich auf diese Frage geantwortet, dass ich keinen Gott habe. Das haette ich nicht tun sollen, denn irgendeinen Gott muss man schon haben; das zeigte mir zumindest die besorge Reaktion des Fragenden. In Zukunft sage ich immer ich sei Christin, womit sich alle zufrieden zeigten. Wobei das kein Hindernis war, dass ich in verschiedene Tempel mitgenommen wurde und auch mir der rote Punkt auf die Stirn verpasst wurde. An Weihnachten habe ich muslimische Frauen in Burka in einer christlichen Kirche Weihnachten feiern gesehen, völlig selbstverständlich, alltäglich. An Jorges Bildern kann ich erkennen, dass auch er tief beeindruckt von dieser allgegenwaertigen Spiritualitaet und der unglaublichen Toleranz war, die wir in Suedindien erleben konnten.

Jorges Ansatz die Recherche ueber Kultur, Maltechniken und lokale Materialien in seine Arbeit zu integrieren, macht aus meiner Perspektive die Arbeiten unglaublich spannend. Ich sehe Jorges Bilder wie eine Collage aus all dem Erlebten und Gefundenen. Und an vielen Stellen sind die Arbeiten deutlich von dieser Geschichte gezeichnet. Obwohl Jorge beim Maler Gobi Leinwaende mit dem Maß 90×90 cm, also ein Quadrat, bestellt hat, hat keine der Leinwaende wirklich diese Abmessung und nur wenige tatsaechlich einen rechten Winkel. Sie sind eben das Produkt echter Handarbeit mit einfachsten Mitteln hergestellt. Auch alle Rahmen sind vor Ort gebaut, in einem kleinen Laden, der bis obenhin vollgestellt war, nachdem wir seine Bilder dorthingebracht hatte, um sie rahmen zu lassen. Um die Bilder fuer den Transport nach Lissabon zu verpacken, mußten wir den Buergersteig vor dem Laden nutzen, mitten zwischen Massen von Fussgaengern, die staendig an uns vorbeispazierten. Viele solcher Herausforderunge gehoeren also mit zum Entstehungsprozess der Bilder und sind deshalb essentieller Bestandteil der Arbeite selbst.

 Nun habe ich Ihnen also von Suedindien erzaehlt. Aber auch die anderen hier ausgestellten Arbeiten sind als reisende Kunst entstanden. Bevor sich Jorge dafuer entschieden hat ein festes Atelier in Berlin einzurichten, hat er ausschliesslich im Rahmen von artistic residences gearbeitet und auf diese Weise die Not, ein Atelier zu haben, zur Tugend gemacht. Fuer mich besonders bezeichnend ist, wie sehr die Entstehungskontexte seine Bilder beeinflussen.

So, und nun habe ich genug erzaehlt. Viel Spaß beim Entdecken dieser Ausstellung!”

“Ponts entre les cultures”

Opening – July 19th, 2011 – 18 hours 
In the foyer of the European Patent Office, PschorrHöfe, Bayerstr. 34, 80335 Munich 

The title provides a rather concrete impression about the character of the works exhibited. Two worlds are combined with regard to their symbols, to their typical elements, they are bridged and communicate with each other regardless of the real political or theological positions. The visitor is invited to think about on a global level and to follow up new ideas, confrontations and relationships.
 
 Jorge da Cruz, born in Lisbon, studied art in the Portuguese capital as well, then opened up to a more complex view by travelling through different parts of the world. Currently he used to live in Berlin. His interest focusses on Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Shivanism – on the teachings and symbols of all principal religious teachings in the European and Asian world. His media style combines a Shiva deity with the cross, arrows with animals of Hinduism. His collages are dominated by a centralised composition, The rough brush stroke and the contours – partially and irregularly covered by colour – remind us of the wall paintings in Stone Age or of contemporary developments. The alignment of various symbols or parts of them in stripes beside each other point to experiences with films and help to establish an advanced type of composition. 
 
Patricia Petapermal from Paris was originally trained in economy. An accident in London completely changed her life, she decided to study art in Strasbourg and discovered her own creativity as an artist. Since brought up as a child of a French mother and an Indian father, she used to live in or between two cultures. Hence her primary and continued idea was to look for expressions between two cultures, as those might be the European and the Indian tradition, the Middle European view and the Russian approach etc. Her profound skills in many techniques, such as painting in oil and acryl, relief works, collages and drawings lead her to a typical, but rather varied style of expressing own philosophical views. The collage system seems to be present as an overall principle also in her paintings, since the compositions are split up in several fields filled out by items and persons of a symbolic character. Those include chairs, Indian deities, the heart, pieces of laundry, signs of Buddhism etc. resulting in a window-like composition of new connotations and relations. Pieces of letters and musical compositions combined with colour and paintings establish a relationship between the past and modern times.  
It is also up to the visitor to discover the bridges and to consider the novel and surprising relationships. “

The postcard is a dimensional talisman, a complex object that follows a strict structure on which this happy narrative of the visitors of Beyond acquires the aura of verisimilitude (…)

1- The postmark confirms spatial-temporally the power from the stamp. The irreversibility in the mark gives ”Wish you were here!” the nostalgic dimension of Beyond drawing from the experience of mortality in the Here.

 

2- The stamp set in the upper right corner, holding the solar position, once exalted in the image of the king, is now paper-money that brings legality under which every postcard is organized.

3The perimeter of the postcard forms the symbolic enclosure on which the rectangle cuts out the narrative. Over the undefined space outside the postcard a geometric zone is cutout within, where all the signs needed to the formation of the happy narrative are organized (like the garden and Persian carpets)

4 - In this small white plain the sender can organize a set of signs (words, drawings, collages, nothing) and the concentration they are subjected to enhances the message, turning them into key contents, chimeric, streaked, unique.

5 - The recipient can find here his own name, and find himself the target of an intention, a remote witness of the happy narrative. In a separate zone from the text, underneath the spatial-temporal order, here the recipient is already separated from the other side, the sender’s side, the Beyond.

6Finally, the sender, the protagonist of the narrative, the one living mishaps, the one who left, the wistful one, the blissful one in paradise, the one who says he misses us although he seems happy, in the transience of the Beyond

(…) Once in a while the postman slips under the door one of these cards, sent by a distant friend, saying under a picture of paradise ”Wish you were here!” In the space of immanence, the postcard – more than the garden - is an heterotopia of the distant here.
Sent postcards are not mere souvenirs. Those who receive them have no memory of their own of what they are seeing, however, they are summoned as witnesses before a happy narrative, whose desire to share this perfect Here represents a gesture of generosity that couldn’t be simpler or more complex. The postcard is not an ontological proof of Beyond, but a hermeneutic gesture, where, briefly, those who write show evidence of a real Beyond led by words and, on the other hand, those to whom it is addressed give evidence of the insurmountable Here under the spell of gratitude and “saudade”.

(…)De quando em quando o carteiro enfia por debaixo da porta um desses postais, enviado por um amigo distante, onde se lê sobre a imagem paradisíaca “I wish you where here!”. No espaço da imanência, o postal – mais do que o jardim – é uma heterotopia do aqui longínquo.

Os postais endereçados não são meros souvenirs. Aquele que o recebe não tem memória própria daquilo que vê, porém, ele é convocado na qualidade de testemunha perante uma narrativa feliz, cujo desejo de partilhar esse aqui perfeito representa um gesto de generosidade que não podia ser mais simples e mais complexo. O postal não é uma prova ontológica do além, mas um gesto hermenêutico, onde, sinteticamente, aquele que escreve dá provas de um além verídico conduzido pela palavra e, por outro lado, aquele a quem é endereçado, dá provas do aqui intransponível sob o feitiço da gratidão e da saudade.

 

O postal é um talismã dimensional, um objecto complexo e que obedece a uma estrutura rigorosa sobre a qual essa narrativa feliz dos visitantes do além adquire a aura da verosimilhança.(…)

The new Berlin artcollective is installed

We are already installed. The shift ended today.

We had the first meeting as a artistic collective today in the new space.
The space will be shared by four artists.
Danniela from Chile: Costume designer
Jorge Cruz from Portugal: Visual Artist, Painting and Drawing
Sergio Fernandes from Portugal: Actor and masks maker
Karen Beth from germany: Sculptress

This new artistic collective will be called RAUMFAHREN! (maybe)

Yes its true…i have again a new studio…

Yes, yes it’s true, I have a new studio.

After a long wait, much prompting and some disappointment, we got the studio we were waiting, in KustRaum Bethanien.

We leave the LandsBurgerAllee atelier this month. Its Over our constant fight against the cold and against all the special and bizarre work conditions that we had until now in the old brewery studios. Although I love that place, Im very happy to change from a chaotic and industrial environment for a very exciting and stimulating artistic life, less alternative but much more professional and demanding.

The space is even bigger than in LandsBergerAlle, now we have 118 square meters divided into several rooms. Much more working space and also space for temporary reception of other artists. This is our plan!!

Learning German through drawings

I’m trying to incorporate my exercise to learn vocabulary in German, with drawings.

My process is to read daily news stories that somehow surprised me, then try to translate them with the aid of drawings or graphic images.

The result are drawings that I want that they “live” by themselves as the target of a learning process, a process of accumulation of knowledge, in this case language learning.

In the end it will be an interesting news report, drawings and my learning process crystallized.

The news are political news, society, art or even caricatures German, all taken from German newspapers.

Drawings “I Forgot”

 

Starting the work: “i forgot” (prov. name)

Organic objects stripped of their color.

This work is about food and about the way that we view what we eat.

This serie of work began with the transformation of “organic objects” on “objects, without personality or charm.

I started with a serie of 6 photos of common vegetables, but  deprived of its original color.

My intension was to show how the vegetables, originaly with so beautiful shapes and colors, become unknown and  uniform bodies, much like the vision that our modern societies face, and carried what they eat.

Each plant embodies the solidification of death, the end.

This is a very nice starting point.

Far away from paradise

ELECTRIC HEATING. Today we received the news that in fact we already knew.1000 w at 1 hour costs 0.50 cents. as a heater is 2000 watts, then it costs € 1.00 per hour. as we have two heaters are 2 € per hour. Now is to make the bills. 5 hours a day of labor costs 10 € … Taking into account these first 10 days, scary.

We just decide. Work in the morning and not night and definitely end with electric heating.

Always with the conviction that we will have to bear the cold. Not so bad …

Yes it’s true We’re working away from paradise, doesn´t matter, we will stay and also will send a postcard from here.
